About the event

Developed by early Christians in Egypt, the Copts, Coptic binding was used from roughly the 2nd century AD to the 11th century.  This workshop explores the evolution of single quire codices to the modern simple Coptic binding (exposed spine binding) using simple tools and beautiful materials.

During the lecture portion of the demonstration, we will discuss the history of traditional Coptic bindings and modern sympathetic techniques.

The instructor will introduce the standard language and vocabulary of the bookbinder and the trade. Bookbinding tools and materials will also be covered above and beyond the topic of Coptic bindings.

Students will leave the demonstration with a fundamental understanding of bookbinding, the knowledge, and experience of creating Coptic bindings, and the history of the structure.

This event will be available to watch 24-48 hours after the conclusion of the demonstration.  Each patron will receive an unlisted link to the exclusive YouTube edited upload. The link will remain active indefinitely so you can watch or rewatch at your leisure. The video will also be available to our Bookbinder and our Book Artist Tiers at www.patreon.com/BOOKFORGE
