About the event

Developed in the Far East and later embraced by the West, stab-binding is a low-cost and simple binding technique. This workshop explores the four basic variations of the stab-binding using simple tools and wonderful materials.   The four variations this workshop will focus on:

1. Yotsume Toji (Four-Hole Binding) – the most common and straightforward style

2. Koki Toji (Noble Binding) – a Chinese variant, also known as Kangxi, which has two extra holes near the corners for additional strength and decoration

3. Asa-No-Ha Toji (Hemp Leaf Binding) – a variation of Kangxi with more holes, including corner stitching, creating a more elaborate and durable binding

4. Kikko Toji (Tortoise Shell Binding) – similar to Asa-No-Ha Toji, without stitching around the corners.

During the lecture portion of the workshop, we will discuss traditionally made stab-bindings and modern sympathetic techniques. The history of this binding structure and its influence on the modern Smyth sewn books we read and write in today.

The instructor will introduce the standard language and vocabulary of the bookbinder and the trade. Bookbinding tools and materials will also be covered above and beyond the topic of stab-bindings.

All tools and materials are included in the cost of the workshop, including the Japanese decorative paper used for the covering material.

Students will leave the workshop with a fundamental understanding of bookbinding, the knowledge and experience of creating stab-bindings, the history of the structure, and one hand-bound stab-binding of their own creation.
